Description

The Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest remained one of Hungary's premier sports venues for decades. Built in 1953 under the name Népstadion, it could seat over 100,000 spectators and was considered a symbol of national pride. The opening match between Honvéd and Spartak Moscow drew around 80,000 fans, demonstrating the scale of the new venue.

The arena made world football history in 1954, when Hungary crushed England 7-1—the heaviest defeat in English history at the time. The stadium hosted two European Athletics Championships, as well as numerous international matches and finals. In 2001, it was named after the legendary striker Ferenc Puskas, who brought fame to Hungarian football in the 1940s and 1950s.

Besides sports, the stadium has also served as a venue for large-scale concerts. In 1986, Queen, led by Freddie Mercury, performed here – a show that became a landmark event for the entire country. The stadium was also used as a filming location for Steven Spielberg's film "Munich."

In 2014, the arena hosted the national team's final match, after which it was dismantled. Today, a modern complex with a capacity of 65,000 spectators has been erected in its place, hosting major sporting and musical events.
